Flag Points
THE CANADA GAMES FLAG
At each Canada Games, the province or territory with the greatest number of points from all events is declared the champion and presented with the Canada Games Flag. Flag points are awarded to every athlete in every sport based on performance and participation and then aggregated for a provincial or territorial total. To date, only three provinces, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, have won the Canada Games Flag.
The chart below outlines the difference between the medal table and the flag point table.
The Canada Games Council awards the Canada Games Flag on the notion that all sports in the Games are equal contributors to a Provincial/Territorial Team’s success. Unlike the Flag Point table, the medal table does not reflect an equal weighting or importance of all sports on the program.
Secondly, the medal table reflects only the achievements of athletes who succeeded to reach the podium. This table, therefore, isn’t a true reflection of a province or territory’s true strength and depth of talent in a particular sport. The sport scoring points in each sport, which are tallied and used to determine the overall flag point standing by sport, show recognition to the strength of a Provincial/Territorial Team’s depth of talent.
The table below indicates the sports that are on the Canada Games program and qualify for flag points. An "X" in the table indicates that flag points have been awarded in that sport. Click on the sport to be taken to the sport-specific table indicating how provinces and territories ranked against each other by sport. Additional sport scoring details are available by event.
